2024 was a defining year for many small businesses. With AI advancements reshaping how we work, algorithm updates keeping everyone on edge, and customers expecting more personalization than ever, it felt like the rules of marketing and business were constantly changing.
For many small business owners I’ve worked with (and myself included), it was a year of testing, pivoting, and—if I’m honest—sometimes just trying to keep up.
The biggest struggles?
Overwhelm from wearing too many hats, uncertainty about where to focus, and the frustration of wondering if any of it was working.
But through all that challenges and changes, there were lessons. Some strategies delivered great results, while others turned out to be just costly distractions.
In this article, I want to unpack some of those lessons—what worked, what didn’t, and how we can all set the stage for a more intentional, effective 2025.
What Worked in 2024
Looking back, the businesses that saw growth and connection in 2024 weren’t necessarily the ones doing more. Instead, they leaned into what made them unique and focused on creating genuine relationships with their audience.
Here is some of what worked well this past year:
- Omni-Channel Approaches: Businesses that engaged customers across multiple platforms—spreading themselves too thin—saw stronger connections and conversions. For example, a wedding venue client of mine saw their booking rate leap from 3% to 75% by using a “search optimization everywhere” approach that included a combination of Pinterest, Instagram, wedding directories, email and SEO. Each platform had a unique purpose in the strategy, creating a cohesive customer journey rooted in their eco-friendly mission.
- Values-Driven Branding: Customers are wanting more authenticity. Brands that embraced their core values didn’t just attract customers; they built communities. A client of mine, a family-run meal prep company, found incredible success by focusing on their “customers are family” ethos. By centering their messaging around this shared connection, they cultivated loyalty and saw an increase in repeat business.
- Leaning Into Customer Relationships: Personalized experiences proved to be a big differentiator. From hand-written thank-you notes to interactive and personalized email sequences, businesses that made their customers feel valued saw tangible results. Relationships matter, and thoughtful touches go a long way. And thankfully, we have the tools and technology available to help us accomplish this.
- User-Generated Content Built Trust: Encouraging customers to share their own photos, videos, and testimonials proved to be effective for many businesses. Not only did this create authentic, relatable content, but it also amplified brand credibility in an organic way.
- AI and Automation Streamlined Processes: Businesses that integrated AI-powered tools—like chatbots, social messaging, and automated email flows—found themselves saving time while maintaining strong customer interactions.
- Video Marketing Captured Attention: From short-form videos on Instagram and TikTok to in-depth explainers on YouTube, video continued, and will continue to be, a powerful way to engage audiences. This trend isn’t slowing down and will remain important moving forward.
The takeaway? Focusing on genuine connections, innovation, and thoughtful execution is more powerful than chasing the latest shiny object.
What Didn’t Work in 2024
Not everything was a win this year. Let’s be honest—we’ve all had moments where things didn’t pan out. Here are the pitfalls I saw most often:
- Jumping on Trends Without a Clear Plan: AI tools and viral content were everywhere, but businesses that chased these trends without a defined goal or strategy often wasted time and energy. A client shared how they spent hours creating Instagram reels and content daily only to see little engagement—and zero impact on their bottom line.
- Trying to Do Everything: Trying to be everywhere all at once often led to burnout and inconsistent results. Businesses that spread themselves across too many platforms found it harder to execute with quality or consistency.
- AI-Generated Content Fell Short: While AI writing tools saved time, “copy-paste” content didn’t perform well in search rankings or with audiences. Human-written content continues to rank higher and feels more relatable. Even though over half of marketers now use AI tools, audiences still gravitate toward authentic, human perspectives.
- Reposting and Aggregating Content: With changes to Facebook and Instagram algorithms, profiles that relied on resharing content or aggregation saw a significant drop in reach. Original, thoughtful posts significantly outperformed shared or recycled content, further reinforcing the need for unique material.
- Holding on to Outdated Tactics: Email lists left untouched, using stale content strategies, and relying too heavily on referrals without actively seeking growth—these approaches left potential on the table.
Any of this sound familiar? The good news is that by identifying these missteps, we can improve them in 2025.
What’s Next for 2025
As we step into 2025, one thing is clear: success requires focus. This is the year to simplify, align your efforts, and work smarter—not harder.
Here are four non-negotiable strategies for small businesses in 2025:
- Values-Based Marketing Remains Vital: Your values aren’t just part of your story—they’re the reason customers connect with you. Building strategies that reflect what you stand for will help you attract aligned customers, create meaningful content, and build loyalty.
- Conversational Marketing Drives Engagement: People are increasingly using natural, conversational language in their searches—especially through voice search. Businesses that prioritize real-time, conversational interactions, whether through chatbots or live chat, will improve customer satisfaction and boost conversions.
- An Integrated, Omnichannel Strategy: Rather than trying to be on every platform without a cohesive strategy, focus on at least 2–3 primary channels where your audience is active. Consistency across those platforms will build trust and provide a seamless customer experience, no matter how they engage with your brand.
- Simplicity and Streamlined Execution: Choose quality over quantity. Refine your processes, focus on what’s driving results based on your goals, and eliminate distractions that don’t align with them. Leverage technology and automation to do more with less—examining not only your workflows but also the tools you’re using. Are they being utilized to their fullest potential to streamline operations, or is it time to explore new solutions, such as all-in-one platforms, to simplify and improve efficiency?
2024 was a year of lessons—some hard, some rewarding, and all valuable. By reflecting on what worked and what didn’t, we can walk into 2025 with a stronger plan, clarity and renewed confidence.
