Are you tired of feeling like you’re shouting into the void on social media, pouring time and money into social media marketing efforts that don’t seem to pay off?
You’re not alone. Pouring resources into social media without seeing results can be incredibly frustrating. Believe me, I’ve been there.
The allure of social media platforms often leads businesses down a path of endless content creation without a cohesive social media strategy. This not only results in wasted resources but also leads to burnout.
And, it doesn’t have to be this way.
Let’s explore how to stop wasting money on social media marketing and, instead, create a plan that makes your online presence work smarter for your business.
We’ll start by looking at two common scenarios where businesses tend to waste time and money on social media marketing:
The Pitfall of Focusing on Social Media Without Looking at Data
Scenario 1: Not Looking at Data
Consider the case of one of my clients who fixated on Instagram as the ultimate marketing avenue. Hours and hours were dedicated to creating content and graphics, chasing that elusive follower count like it was the holy grail of success.
While follower growth is important and can lead to increased reach and engagement, ultimately, it’s about quality vs. quantity. Wouldn’t you rather have 100 followers that engage with your content, visit your website and opt-in to one of your offerings, than 2,000 followers that show no engagement and are not ultimately expressing interest in what you have to offer?
Yet, little attention was paid to the actual impact on the bottom line. Important metrics were not being looked at specifically to what type of content was working best, the best days and times to post, what content was driving the most engagement or website traffic.
And when we dug into the data, we made a surprising discovery: LinkedIn was actually bringing in way more website visits than Instagram. This revelation emphasized the importance of analyzing your data to focus on metrics that connect to revenue, not just follower counts.
So, we pivoted. Instead of burning herself out with daily Instagram posts, weekly meetings to review content and graphics, we dialed it back to two to three times a week and shifted some of her energy over to LinkedIn. Not only did she get relief from the constant pressure of content creation, but there was also a tangible payoff in focusing on LinkedIn.
In a study by Neil Patel, 118 businesses were surveyed across various industries to identify their prioritized marketing channels. The majority of their marketing efforts were directed towards organic social media. However, when the ROI of these channels was analyzed, organic social media delivered the worst results.
This highlights the critical importance of data analysis in making informed decisions about where you spend your time when it comes to social media marketing.
The problem with “Just Pumping Out Content”
Scenario 2: Investing in Social Media Contractors Without a Strategy
I recently hired a contractor on Fiverr to work on my social media content. The contractor had a profile with hundreds of positive reviews, suggesting that her previous clients were happy with their work. So, I hired the contractor and provided the information needed to move forward. Unfortunately, the information I provided was pretty much ignored, and what I got back was disappointing — it was generic, “templated” content with things like statistics, quotes, and regurgitated marketing advice.
The experience got me thinking about the widespread use of generic, repetitive content lacking strategic direction or unique brand positioning in today’s social media landscape. The notion that merely having a presence is sufficient is a common misconception. Many overlook the critical importance of a strategic approach, high-quality content, and authentic brand representation, which are essential for leveraging social media to build relationships, connect with target audiences, and ultimately drive traffic to their platforms.
While hiring social media contractors from platforms like Fiverr can be beneficial, it’s important to establish a clear, coherent strategy beforehand. It’s also important to ensure the chosen professional possesses the experience and expertise to effectively execute that strategy.
It’s no wonder many small business owners struggle to see a return on their social media marketing investments!
How to Get a Return for Your Time, Money, and Effort
So, what can you do?
How can you get the most out of the time, money, resources, and effort you spend on social media?
1. Pause and Analyze
To approach marketing strategically, take some time to brainstorm and analyze what you’re doing. Get curious and ask smart questions. Many business owners invest in marketing efforts they’ve seen work for others without consistently looking at data or analytics to ensure it’s working for them.
— Is it driving value? Is it profitable?
Evaluating the value and profitability of your social media efforts involves reviewing metrics like conversion rates, customer acquisition costs, and return on investment (ROI). These metrics help determine whether your campaigns are translating into actual business outcomes.
— From what you’ve produced so far, what’s working and what isn’t?
Analyzing engagement metrics such as likes, shares, comments, and clicks can provide insights into the effectiveness of your content. Additionally, tracking website traffic from social media channels via Google Analytics helps identify which platforms drive the most visitors and conversions.
— What evidence is there for that? What can you learn from the data?
Data-driven insights reveal patterns and trends that can inform strategic decisions. For instance, understanding peak engagement times or the types of content that resonate most with your audience enables you to optimize your posting schedule and content strategy.
Using tools like Google Analytics and social media management platforms like PlannThat or SocialBee can help you collect and analyze the data needed to understand what’s working and what’s not. These tools offer metrics such as audience demographics, engagement rates, and post performance, allowing you to refine your social media approach based on data. This will enable you to make informed decisions to optimize your social media efforts.
Also, consider your competitors and target audience.
- Where does your audience hang out?
- Are you spreading yourself too thin by sharing mediocre posts on multiple social media platforms instead of high-quality posts on the platform where your customers spend the most time?
Focusing on quality over quantity ensures that your content resonates deeply with your audience, fostering stronger connections and driving meaningful engagement.
According to HubSpot’s State of Marketing Report, these are the most effective marketing channels for businesses in 2024:
- SEO: 16%
- Social media shopping tools: 16%
- Paid social: 14%
- Email marketing: 14%
- Content marketing: 14%
This further emphasizes the importance of reviewing your data, ensuring you have a solid marketing strategy, and using the right tactics to connect you with your target audience for maximum returns.
2. Improve Your Marketing Operations
Another common mistake is focusing solely on creating content without thinking about the systems and processes needed to support their content marketing strategy.
Some key areas within your operations to start with are:
— Customer Journey Mapping: Clearly define and map out your customer journey. Understand the different stages your customers go through, from awareness to consideration to decision. Tailor your marketing efforts to address their needs at each stage, providing relevant content and interactions that guide them smoothly through the funnel.
— Lead Capture Systems: Do you have the right technology, systems, and processes in place to capture leads and guide them through your customer journey? Tools like CRM and marketing automation software (one I recommend is Keap) allow you to automate parts of your customer journey as well as implement email marketing automation to streamline communication with your leads. Automated email sequences can nurture your leads by providing valuable content, addressing their pain points, and gradually leading them towards a purchase decision.
— Lead Magnets: Do you have a lead magnet, such as a guide, checklist, or free training, that is supported by a comprehensive lead capture system? This system should include a well-designed landing page, a custom trackable link to measure traffic sources, a thank you page to confirm their subscription, and an email sequence to welcome and nurture new leads. This setup helps in converting visitors from your social channels into engaged prospects.
Enhancing your marketing operations ensures that your social media efforts are supported by efficient systems that capture and nurture leads, ultimately driving better results for your business.
3. Create Impactful Content That Tells Your Brand Story
Many business owners face the challenge of maintaining consistent content creation, knowing that consistency is important in engaging their audience. While consistency is indeed vital, equally important is the quality of the content you publish, especially in today’s AI world. This is where content pillars come into play.
What are Content Pillars?
Content pillars are themes or topics that form the foundation of your content strategy. They are developed from your brand identity, expertise, and the core values that define your business. These pillars ensure that every piece of content you create aligns with your brand narrative and resonates with your target audience.
Why are Content Pillars Important?
— Strategic Focus: By identifying and defining content pillars, you establish a clear framework for your content strategy. This strategic focus helps in consistently delivering content that reinforces your brand message and goals.
— Efficiency in Content Creation: Content pillars streamline the content creation process. They guide you in brainstorming ideas and planning campaigns that address various stages of the customer journey, from building awareness to nurturing leads and driving conversions.
— Audience Engagement: Tailoring content around specific pillars ensures relevance and value for your audience. When your content addresses their pain points, interests, and aspirations, it fosters deeper connections and encourages engagement.
— Brand Consistency: Content pillars maintain brand consistency across different channels and platforms. They uphold your unique voice and perspective, reinforcing your authority in your industry and distinguishing your brand from competitors.
Implementing Content Pillars
- Identify Core Themes: Determine the key topics or themes that align with your brand values and expertise. These should resonate with your target audience and address their needs. Some examples are industry insights, service or product tips, customer success stories, and behind-the-scenes content.
- Create Pillar Content: Develop cornerstone pieces of content under each pillar. These could be social media posts, infographics, or engaging videos that showcase your knowledge and provide valuable insights. For example, create an in-depth video series on industry trends that explains a specific topic in your field.
- Diversify Content Formats: Utilize various social media content formats to cater to different audience preferences. This includes short-form videos (like Instagram Reels), carousel posts, and Instagram Stories. This diversity ensures that your content remains fresh and engaging across different platforms.
- Iterate and Refine: Continuously monitor the performance of your pillar content. Analyze social media metrics such as likes, shares, comments, reach, and conversions to refine your approach. Use feedback and data to optimize your content strategy, ensuring it stays relevant and impactful.
By leveraging content pillars, you not only streamline your content creation process but also enhance the effectiveness of your social media marketing efforts. This approach enables you to consistently deliver valuable, compelling content that strengthens your brand identity and drives meaningful connections with your audience.
4. Consider Going Beyond Social Media Marketing
Social networks are great for building an online presence and generating leads, but it’s important to remember that we don’t control these platforms.
Remember when Facebook and Instagram went down in 2021? It happened again recently in March 2024. These outages can disrupt your marketing efforts and highlight the risk of relying solely on third-party platforms.
Consider leveraging social media to create an independent community that doesn’t leave you reliant on one particular platform. Building an email list is a powerful way to maintain direct contact with your audience, ensuring you can reach them anytime without the restrictions of social media algorithms or platform outages. Also, using platforms like Mighty Networks offer a space to cultivate a dedicated community, fostering deeper connections and engagement.
Think about how your content marketing strategy can support you in creating your own community of fans and loyal customers. Use social media to drive traffic to these independent channels, ensuring a more resilient and controlled marketing approach.
